day 19 : How To Make A Driving License
Driving a vehicle down to the city is restricted to those who have a proper driving license. So, you have to have such license if you want to avoid any trouble with local police. Making driving license is cheap and easy as long as you have your supporting documents such as id card (KTP or passport for foreigners) and you have the proper driving skill. It should only take a few days even less to get through the whole procedure including preparation, registration, writing test, driving test and license release.
First, you have to prepare your self. You will need to have id card, birth certificate and other supporting documents such as registration form which would cost you about 75 thousands rupiah, medical record and insurrance which could be processed in Police Station. Don’t forget to select suitable license type which you wanted to have. If you plan to drive a car then you would need A type driving license, while C type is for motorcycle. Other license’s type such as B1 or B2 are provided as an upgrade from A type which would allow you to drive a bigger car such as truck or bus.
When your documents are complete, then you could continue to register your self and then you would be scheduled for writing test. The writing test would measure your knowledge of basic traffic rules which is needed to be understood by road users. This test is mandatory to continue to the driving test which would measure your ability on driving a real vehicle. By passing those two test then you would be admitted to have driving license which means you are allowed to drive the suitable vehicle by law.
After all, obtaining driving license is not hard as long as you have your documents completely. People thought there would be a lot of hassles while obtaining a driving license. It because of the incompleteness of their supporting documents or the lack of basic driving rules. Even so, I personally think that it would be much better having a proper driving license than encountering problem in the road cause your don’t have one.
day 18 : They Were Important
There was time when these things were important items in our life. But their significance fades away along with the rise of newer technology which in turn could fully replace their functions. I’m here talking about public telephone service, postal service and pager which are replaced by cellular phone, email and short message service.
In the age of connectivity as in today, communication is considered as the most important thing in life which affect many people behavior and habits. Thus, communication service evolves into faster and cheaper forms. Years ago, public telephone boxes were provided in many places and crowds which were relied for people communication needs. But today, by the availability of cellular which become less expensive, the popularity of public telephone box declines. People would dial their colleagues directly to their cells. They no longer need public telephone service, even worse, most public telephone service are unable to dial to cellphones.
Other great changes of communication service’s popularity are postal service and pager. Postal service which was important as a reliable mean of communication is replaced by e-mail. It is faster, cheaper and reliable, even every one could have their own address privately in easier form to be remembered. One thing that keeps postal service survive is the uniqueness of handwriting of a letter which eventually could be mimiced by e-mail. While pager which was also popular as a beeper is no longer used because people could easily beep other by short message service which is bundled in a cellular phone’s service. It even provide in faster and more private way that people could type their message without the presence of third party as it was in pager.
Finally, nature selection is a natural process which could never be evaded. Even it should not bother us and made us try to avoid such changes. It would be much better if we could aware by these changes and anticipate them to attain advatages they offered. Moreover, these are the evidence of human activity to evolve into a better condition.
day 16 : Pasar Beringharjo
This afternoon, I have the chance to crawling inside the largest traditional market in Yogyakarta, Pasar Beringharjo. Without doubt, it plays a major role in Yogyakarta’s economic growth as it is a rendesvouz place of many merchants with varies traded items. Pasar Beringharjo which is located in the south most part of Malioboro street is very special because it could survive under the pressure of more modern franchised hypermarket for some reasons.

I would point to customer loyalty as a main factor of Pasar Beringharjo survival. People keep coming back to trade their items here, it even started to be overloaded though the building had been renovated into triple its original capacity years ago. We could see the spill of merchants in the market’s corridors and streets. They spread their goods along pavements and compete with road users such as pedestrians and vehicles.
Second factor of Pasar Beringharjo’s flourishness is because it is unique. Just ask visitors which came from other cities, they would spend their vacation’s time to visit this market for souvenirs. It is known as a center of many art products which are produced by local craftmen. We could find batik clothes, paintings, sculptures, traditional households, and many unique souvenirs here. It seems that Yogyakarta’s craftmen never worn out of idea to create arts, perhaps it is in their blood to be an artist.
So, I would suggest that Pasar Beringharjo would never be defeated by many grand new hypermarkets as it has its own customer and uniqueness. Unlike other traditional market which are threatened by these modern markets, Pasar Beringharjo serves many people in its way which makes people keep returning to trade. Merchants here are very intelligent that their brain always sparks for new approach to attract local and incoming but loyal customers which is unlikely owned by industrialized modern markets.
